Here are some of the usability improvements that Wikia has been working on. They're all available under the GPL at wikia-code.com.

  • Static edit bar moves the confusing text out of view and puts the save button always in sight to prevent people typing their text and then not knowing they need to do something to save it. (screenshot)
  • More obvious edit buttons as many people still don't realise they can edit. (View this logged out for an example of more prominent section edit buttons. (screenshot)
  • Simpler image upload, flickr importer (could easily be turned into a Wikimedia Commons importer). Help page, screenshot
  • Search suggest and link suggest - these features need rewriting to be less DB intensive. With link suggest, you start typing [[So and it will display [[Some link]] to complete the link for you, using existing page titles on that wiki. (help page)
  • Edit Page Enhancements include widescreen mode and help tips in the sidebar. Of course, the tips are editable and internationalizable. (Help page)
