Usefulness of so called barriers
Maybe there is some usefulness in those "barriers" as in "thereby reducing barriers to public participation". I totally agree that technical metaphors are a problematic issue to non technically oriented people and thus should be fought. On the other hand, most barriers are conequerable with some
- Ideally those would filter participants (to Wikipedia) by motivation, not by technical knowledge. Thus I prefer simpler systems that need some kind of effort to adapt to them. Maybe you can substantiate or deny this by more scientific means? Maybe some studies about motivation vs. adaption to the existing user interfaces.
